Clearwell is located in the Forest of Dean in west Gloucestershire , about 2km east of the River Wye.  The site is at an elevation of 149m (484′) above sea level in a narrow steep-sided valley orientated NW – SE and this has an effect on the prevailing wind direction.  The surrounding hills reach 215m (700′) above sea level and provide shelter from strong winds and also create a frost hollow.

I have been an amateur meteorologist for over 60 years and was employed and trained by the Meteorological Office as a Scientific Assistant.  Between 1959 & 1966 my roles included making regular weather observations at London Gatwick Airport, RAF Little Rissington, RAF Kemble and Bristol Filton airfield and reporting those to air traffic control and Met office HQ.

The equipment I use is the Davis Vantage pro 2 Wireless setup to records the elements and these are transmitted to this site (see ‘Live Weather Feed’ page) and other weather web sites such as wunderground.com
